Review: Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard

Series: Red Queen #1
Publication: February 10th 2015 by HarperTeen
Genre: Young Adult, Fantasy
Format: Hardcover, 383 pages
Rating:
Mare Barrow's world is divided by blood―those with common, Red blood serve the Silver-blooded elite, who are gifted with superhuman abilities. Mare is a Red, scraping by as a thief in a poor, rural village, until a twist of fate throws her in front of the Silver court. Before the king, princes, and all the nobles, she discovers she has an ability of her own.
To cover up this impossibility, the king forces her to play the role of a lost Silver princess and betroths her to one of his own sons. As Mare is drawn further into the Silver world, she risks everything and uses her new position to help the Scarlet Guard―a growing Red rebellion―even as her heart tugs her in an impossible direction. One wrong move can lead to her death, but in the dangerous game she plays, the only certainty is betrayal.

THE TORTURE IS UNBEARABLE!

We'll have to wait for another year for the second book
but but but
a novella entitled Queen Song (Red Queen #0.5) is coming this September!!

I am very sure that that novella will be a dandy read just like Red Queen! I just feel uncool towards the readers who have not liked this book at all but oh, well, it's the beaut of reading, we see each story differently.

They don't know the meaning of danger or fear or pain. It's only their pride that can be truly hurt. ― Victoria Aveyard, Red Queen

An edition on Goodreads had a synopsis of Red Queen as "Graceling meets The Selection". Surely whoever wrote or decided to put that selling tag have never read the book. Shame! It could mislead readers especially those who love Graceling and The Selection. I have not read both books but I know the flow! Like, duh?

But somehow, one edition brought the justice! "A thrilling new fantasy trilogy for fans of DIVERGENT and THE HUNGER GAMES."! Yes, people! If you are a buff of those books, you will love Red Queen! In the middle, as things went bumpy on Mare and Maven, I can feel a Katniss Everdeen spirit on Mare, then everything was like Mockingjay! Well, not exactly the same but UGH.

Red Queen was written by Victoria Aveyard showing us equality. That even in a dystopian world, there is no equality because of corruption of power, and in Red Queen, the Silvers and Reds are the powerful and the powerless. Through the protagonist, we experience both the color lives―from Mare Borrow to Lady Mareena Titanos. She have grown the inadequate life and justice of a Red but went to live the fulgent powers and abilities of the Silvers, only then that dimmed her.

"I didn't ask if you could read it," he replies, still pleasant. "Besides, words can lie. See beyond them." ― Victoria Aveyard, Red Queen

The other characters are substantially mark! Maven is an outstanding one. If Red Queen would be a movie soon, I want to tell the director to please give a justice to Maven's character. He's definitely the most important character aside Mare. Get a great actor!! And what makes Red Queen even an implausible fantasy read? QUEEN ELARA. She's on my top demagogue list! You will know her and you'll love her when you read this book. Not saying much details because I'm pushing you to read Red Queen!

From a debut author Victoria Aveyard comes an exquisite read of savagery, where a seventeen year old Red is bound to take integrity. A profound, tremendous read for every MOCKINGJAYxGAMEOFTHRONES lover.

  4. At first before Red Queen was released, I wanted to read it soooo bad. Then it came out, reviews started rolling in, and I seen soooo many people disappointed with the story! I never let that sway me from picking a book up, especially since I've already purchased it, but I'm soooo on the fence about reading it. I most likely will, I just hope I enjoy it! I love your review style girl * kisses *

    1. Thank yooooooooou so much, Martika, for appreciating my review style. That's how it goes when I don't know how to review a book but with all the rage of my feels! *Evil grin!

Oh yes, I'm disappointed after reading and reviewing Red Queen. Some do agree with me but mostly they don't. *Sigh. I really blame the selling tag Graceling meets The Selection. (Sorry not sorry.) People are expecting things differently. ARGH.

  8. Like you, I also enjoyed Red Queen! My problem was that especially in the beginning, there was so much overlap with other novels in the genre. (Then again, who wouldn't love a mashup of some of the best in YA?!) Loved your review, Yani and I'm glad you loved the book so much.

I'm happy to have stumbled across your blog today. xx

  11. I ended up completely loving this one. Yes there were some parallel's to other famous series but don't all dystopian novels have common threads? I didn't mind the similarities, if ound that Victoria Aveyard managed to make this one her own perfectly. brilliant review!

I still don't know how we'll survive until book two, especially with that ending as well. Brilliant review Yani, I'm absolutely thrilled you loved this one too <3
